Harnessing Personal Experiences
Compartiendo Sonrisas was born in 2023 from Sofía’s own battle against cancer, which prompted her to make her Personal Project about helping those who were going through what she went through. During her journey, she became aware that many children in Mexico diagnosed with cancer have little to no access to treatments and medication. She decided this couldn’t stand.
Involving the Whole Community
With support from her friends and family, Sofía’s project saw her creating the Compartiendo Sonrisas initiative to fundraise for aid. Boots on the ground and working hard selling chocolates, she grew what began as a personal mission into a powerful example of community building, not just within the school, but beyond.
Take Sofía’s sister, Isabella, for example. Inspired, she built her Personal Project around the same cause. Also going to fundraising route, she hosted a brunch where children from AMANC (Asociación Mexicana de Ayuda a Niños con Cáncer) put on a fashion show. They modelled on a runway wearing sweatshirts designed especially for the occasion to raise money for the project.
Growing Beyond Expectations
This year, we’re proud to share that Compartiendo Sonrisas was awarded the NAE Social Impact Grant. This generous funding will allow the project to expand its scope and be able to help much more. For example, chocolate sales were limited because the packaging did not meet government regulations. Now, the grant will help cover the cost of specialized packaging that will let the fundraising go beyond the school community.
From a genuine desire to help others, Compartiendo Sonrisas has evolved into a strong, compassionate community. The NAE grant—which aims to support initiatives that address social issues and drive positive change—is a meaningful step in this compassionate journey of generosity and impact.
