7:50 Arrivals
Children arrive in the classroom and are greeted by the adults and their peers. They are supported in organizing their belongings and attempting some form of self registration (e.g. finding their picture and copying their name). They may engage in some initial exploration of the environment either independently or facilitated by an adult.
8:10 Morning Meeting
This is an essential time of the day for Early Learning students to help them transition to a new day of learning. During morning meetings students go through activities and routines with the purpose of building a strong community and providing students with a sense of comfort and safety at school. Each morning, students and teachers gather together in a circle for a short period of time.
The morning meeting routine includes four vital components:
-
Welcome Song - This song will serve as a signal that the day their day is beginning. This will be followed by the students and teachers greeting one another by name and practicing hospitality.
-
Sharing - Each student shares information about important events in their lives. Listeners often offer empathetic comments or ask clarifying questions.
-
Group Activity - everyone participates in a brief, lively activity that fosters group cohesion and helps students practice social and academic skills (examples: counting students present and absent, compare the number of absent and present students, talking about the weather, learning about the days of the weeks and months).
-
Review the Schedule or the Routines for the Day - having a daily picture schedule or routine is an important part of establishing routines and transitions in the class. Having a consistent daily routine helps the students know generally what to expect which helps them to feel safe and secure.
8:30 Play and Inquiry Time (Indoor and Outdoor) and Specialist classes
Students are given the opportunity to explore authentic, engaging and enticing experiences both in our indoor and outdoor environments. This learning is constructed according to the student's own interests and is facilitated and extended through teacher/adult interactions.
