Sound Meets Movement, Sound Becomes Expression: Celebrating a Year of Artistic Growth at Léman

As the school year draws to a close, the Arts Department brought our community together for two special celebrations of learning, creativity, and growth. Through Sound Meets Movement and Sound Becomes Expression, students from across the school shared the results of months of dedication, practice, and artistic exploration.
The concerts showcased much more than musical and dance skills. They provided students with an opportunity to step into the spotlight, demonstrate how they have grown throughout the year, and reveal sides of themselves that are not always visible in the classroom. Whether performing as part of a large ensemble, dancing in front of a packed theatre, or taking on a featured solo role, students showed confidence, commitment, and artistry.
The afternoon concert, Sound Meets Movement, highlighted the enthusiasm and energy of our younger performers. One particularly memorable moment was Year 4's performance of A Million Dreams, which delighted the audience with its charm and optimism. Throughout the concert, students demonstrated growing confidence as singers, musicians, and dancers, while families filled the theatre with enthusiastic applause and encouragement.

The emotional finale of the concert came with the Primary Choir's performance of See You Again, a heartfelt tribute to Mr. Dolan as he prepares to leave Léman. Accompanied by a thoughtful visual presentation prepared with support from Ms. Zhang, the performance reflected the strong relationships that make our school community so special.

Reflecting on the experience, Primary Choir Director Ms. Atayeva shared:
"Music has a unique way of bringing people together and helping us express feelings that can sometimes be difficult to put into words. Watching our students honour Mr. Dolan through song was incredibly moving and showed the care and appreciation they have for the people who have supported them."
Bringing together such a large number of young performers is no small task. With well over one hundred students participating across the concert, careful planning and preparation were essential.
"What impressed me most was seeing students support one another," said Ms. Zhang. "A concert like this involves so many moving pieces, but the students rose to the challenge. Seeing them perform with confidence and pride made all the hard work worthwhile."
The evening concert, Sound Becomes Expression, showcased the continued artistic growth of our older students. Audiences were treated to a wide variety of performances that demonstrated both technical skill and personal expression. Among the many highlights were an outstanding saxophone feature with the Instrumental Ensemble and a captivating solo dance performance by Roy (Year 6), which left a lasting impression on the audience.

Backstage, excitement filled the theatre as students prepared to perform, encouraged one another, and celebrated the culmination of a year of learning. The enthusiastic response from the audience reflected the dedication and effort that students had invested throughout the year.
The concert concluded with a particularly meaningful moment for the Arts Department as Mr. Wong took the stage for his final performance at Léman, performing John Lennon's Imagine. The performance served as a fitting conclusion to both the evening and an important chapter in the life of the school.
Reflecting on the occasion, Mr. Wong said:
"One of the greatest privileges of teaching music is watching students discover what they are capable of. These concerts remind us that growth is not only measured in musical skill, but also in confidence, resilience, and the willingness to share something meaningful with others. Ending my time at Léman surrounded by such talented students was truly special."
Together, Sound Meets Movement and Sound Becomes Expression celebrated the extraordinary creativity of our students and the dedication of the teachers, families, and staff who support them. As another school year comes to a close, these performances served as a powerful reminder of what the arts make possible: growth, connection, self-expression, and community.
Thank you to all of the students, teachers, families, and audience members who helped make these concerts such memorable celebrations of learning.
