Preparing for University: Léman Pre-University Parent Workshop

At Léman International School Chengdu, university preparation is a journey that develops gradually, helping students understand themselves, explore possibilities and make informed decisions about their future.

Recently, Léman welcomed parents to our Pre-University Parent Preparation Workshop, led by University Counsellor, Mr. James Sandoval. The workshop introduced Léman’s Discover → Decide → Apply approach, highlighting how university readiness develops from Primary through to Year 13.

For Primary students, the focus is on building strong foundations through curiosity, positive learning habits, confidence and self-awareness. From Year 7 to Year 9, students are encouraged to explore their strengths, interests and potential academic and career pathways while keeping their options open. From Year 10 to Year 13, university preparation becomes more focused, covering IB Diploma subject choices, extracurricular experiences, academic grades, university research and shortlisting, as well as application requirements and deadlines.

The workshop also gave families an insight into Léman’s recent university outcomes. Our students’ university destinations span 19 universities across 8 countries and regions on three continents, reflecting a diverse range of 14 academic pathways, from STEM and business to design, social, sciences, media, the arts and hospitality. Scholarships awarded to our graduates have an estimated total value of more than USD 1 million this year, reflecting the strength of our personalised approach to university counselling.

Parents also explored the different admission systems in key destinations including the UK, China Hong Kong and the United States, and were introduced to Unifrog, Léman’s university and careers platform for career exploration, activity tracking, university research, shortlisting and application organisation. A dedicated Q&A session provided families with the opportunity to discuss their individual questions with Mr. Sandoval.

A key message from the workshop was the importance of parents as calm and consistent supporters. Rather than making decisions for their children, families can help students develop independence and confidence by encouraging open conversations about their interests, aspirations and future goals.

“University preparation is not a last-minute task in Year 13. Strong university readiness grows step by step over many years. When school and families work hand in hand, every student can explore possibilities, make informed choices and pursue their best-fit university pathway worldwide.” said our Principal, Ms. Connor.

At Léman, university counselling is an integral part of our whole-school approach to student development. Through personalised guidance, global opportunities and strong school-family collaboration, we support every student in discovering their strengths, making informed choices and taking confident steps towards their future.
