Emerson College Visits Léman

Emerson College Visits Léman - Emerson College

At Léman, we believe that informed decisions are good decisions. An important part of our university guidance programme is providing students with opportunities to explore their options, ask meaningful questions, and speak directly with university representatives.

We were delighted to welcome Emerson College, located in Boston, Massachusetts, for our first university visit of the 2026–27 academic year.

Emerson College is known for its focus on communication, media, writing, and the creative and performing arts. Its academic programmes reflect these specialisations, offering students a range of pathways into creative industries.

Rather than hosting a traditional presentation, we invited Emerson's representatives to meet students at an open table in the school's main lobby. This approach allowed students from Y9 to Y13 to stop by, ask questions, and engage in conversations about studying in the United States, preparing for creative careers, and becoming competitive university applicants.

Our Y12 students were particularly engaged. What was especially encouraging, however, was that their questions extended beyond Emerson College itself. They asked thoughtful questions relevant to students considering universities around the world.

Here are three important questions students asked, along with advice shared by Emerson's representatives.

1. What does a strong personal statement look like?

Emerson's advice: Be authentic. Demonstrate genuine passion, provide context for your experiences, and don't be afraid to discuss both successes and failures. These experiences help universities understand who you are beyond your academic achievements.

AI can be a useful tool for checking spelling and grammar, but students should avoid relying on it to write their personal statements. Universities want to hear the student's own voice.

2. Why should I consider studying in the United States, particularly Boston?

Emerson's advice: One advantage of the US university system is its flexibility. Students often have opportunities to explore different academic interests before fully committing to a particular area of study.

Boston is also a diverse, international city with an extensive university community, a strong academic culture, and convenient public transportation.

3. What should I be doing now to become a competitive university applicant?

Emerson's advice: Seek meaningful experiences connected to your interests. These might include internships, school activities, volunteering, independent projects, or attending relevant classes and lectures.

The goal is not simply to build a long list of activities, but to demonstrate genuine engagement, curiosity, and personal development.

Looking Ahead

Emerson College's visit was a wonderful start to our university engagement programme this academic year.

We look forward to welcoming more universities to Léman, providing students with opportunities to explore different countries, academic pathways, and future careers.

Ultimately, our goal is not simply to help students gain admission to university. It is to help them develop the knowledge, confidence, and perspective to make university decisions that are right for them.

Because at Léman, informed decisions are good decisions.
