Extra-Curricular Activities at NAISAK
From sports to music to special interest clubs, there is no shortage of activities for students to choose from at NAISAK. Our Extra-Curricular Activity (ECA) programme got off to a smooth start last week allowing students to take part in one or two of the 48 clubs on offer. Arts and craft activities, physical activity and Lego are proving to be very popular this cycle, which gives us a huge indication as to what our students enjoy.
Some parents may ask if participation in ECAs is important. The reality is that after-school activities do more than simply fill up time. At NAISAK, we aim to enrich and extend your child’s learning. For your child, attending an ECA has many benefits outside of academics. A 2003 study by the Journal of Adolescent Research showed many benefits from improved academic performance, relationship skills and personal growth. In addition, they can provide a much-needed break from study, especially for secondary-age students, providing them with the chance to get outside and exercise, see friends, pursue a hobby, or simply destress and refresh their mind. On the flip side, students can also be given the chance to do extra study and gain extra qualifications, such as the French DELF ECA last year with Ms Céline.
Children spend a lot of time in front of a TV or computer screen, and in the current climate, the thought of going outside is not appealing to most. Attending an extra hour after school can help limit screen time as well as help your child to build on their skills outside of the classroom. Developing soft skills are just as important as academic skill for example. Debating, teamwork, communication, creativity and competitive skills can all be developed through our MUN, sports, DIY Craft clubs and International Award.
ECAs can also open your child’s mind to new interests. Our sailing club is a prime example of this. Students travel to Doha on a Wednesday and take part in a structured programme led by Doha Sailing Club. Over time, students will begin to see improvements as they dedicate time and energy into a specific skill. This in turn helps to build confidence and self-esteem, making it more likely that students will try new things in the future.
Our ECA offer is popular and currently works on a first come, first served basis. The system is time sensitive, allowing us to see very clearly the order in which submissions were entered. Whilst some students did not get their first choice ECAs, we are working hard to open additional clubs and/or provide an alternative. Registers will be monitored weekly and should places become available, students on the waiting list will be offered a place in order. We are also listening to feedback on the sign-up process and will aim to improve what we can next time.
