Making the Most of the October Half-Term: Ideas That Don't Involve a Screen

Half-term is almost here. From 12 to 18 October, schools across the UAE break for the mid-term holiday, families have a generous stretch of time together before the second half of term begins.
The question most parents face is the same every year: how do you make it feel like a proper break without it becoming a week of screens and late nights that leaves everyone feeling worse than when they started?
The answer, more often than not, is simpler than you'd think.
Let them rest first
The first day or two of any school breaks should belong entirely to your child. October half-term falls at a particular point in the. A child who gets a real chance to decompress in the first couple of days will get far more out of the rest of the week than one who is immediately signed up for activities.
Sleep in. Have a slow morning. Let them choose what to do with an unstructured afternoon. It might look like nothing. It rarely is.
Get outside while the weather lets you
October is one of the best months to be in Abu Dhabi. The temperatures have dropped enough to make being outside genuinely enjoyable, and that window is worth using. Between October and March, the pleasant weather lets families make the most of both indoor and outdoor activities without worrying about the intense summer heat.
The Corniche comes into its own at this time of year, a long walk, a bike ride, a picnic on the grass. Saadiyat Beach is worth a visit before the season gets fully underway. For families who haven't explored Al Ain, this is the perfect time: the oasis, the mountain road up Jebel Hafeet and the desert park offer a completely different side of Abu Dhabi that children remember long after they've forgotten what they did on Yas Island.
Build in something that feeds their curiosity
Half-term is a good moment for the kind of visit that doesn't feel like school but quietly is. The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi is worth an afternoon for children who like to ask questions. The Louvre Abu Dhabi even for children who claim not to be interested in art has a way of surprising people. KidZania Abu Dhabi gives children aged 4 to 14 a chance to explore different roles and careers through hands-on experiences and reliably earns its reputation. teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi offers something genuinely immersive for families looking for something a little different.
None of these need to be framed as educational. They just need to be interesting. And at this age, interesting is enough.
The purpose of half-term isn't to stop learning. It's to rest enough that learning can begin again properly. A child who returns to school on feeling rested, connected to their family and slightly more themselves than they were when they left is a child who's ready for the second half of term. That's the real goal.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday 19 October.
