Why the Start of Term Is One of Our Favourite Times of the Year

Some moments in a school year stay with you. The first week of term is always one of them.

Not because it's easy. The start of term is busy, logistically complex and full of energy that comes from hundreds of people restarting something together all at once. But that energy is also the point. There's nothing quite like watching a school come back to life.

This week, our doors opened again. And it felt, as it always does, like something worth marking.

What we see in the first week

The first few days of term have something that's hard to describe. Children who have grown noticeably over the summer. Friendships being picked straight back up as though no time has passed at all. Nervous new faces gradually relaxing as they realise the place is warmer than they feared.

There are always children who arrive on the first morning full of energy, already talking, already settled. And there are always children who need a little longer — who hover at the edge of things for a day or two before finding their footing. Both are completely normal. Both are part of what the first week looks like, in every school, every year.

What our staff are focused on in these early days isn't curriculum. It's connection. Getting to know new students. Rebuilding relationships with the ones they already know. Creating the kind of atmosphere in which children feel safe enough to take risks, ask questions and be themselves.

Everything else follows from that.

Why community matters at the start of term

A school isn't a building. It's the people in it and the relationships between them. Those relationships need tending — especially at the start of a new year, when everything is slightly unfamiliar and the rhythms of school life are still being re-established.

This is why the beginning of term is so important. It's when the culture of a school is set for the year ahead. The habits formed now, the expectations established now, the connections made now — these shape everything that follows.

We take that seriously. And we think it's worth families knowing that the first few weeks are as much about belonging as they are about learning. The two, of course, are not separate. A child who feels they belong learns better, engages more and faces challenges with more confidence.
