Going Solo Vocalists get the opportunity to sing solo in New York.
From Broadway to Folk, Jazz to Pop, the musical spectrum was explored as vocalists participating in Nord Anglia Education's Global Orchestra and Choir had the opportunity, during their trip to New York, to perform in an informal solo concert.
As the first participants to perform before their peers and parents, there was much nervous anticipation of the evening.
Global Orchestra Musical Director and MC, Paul Wright welcomed guests from as far afield as Japan and China, explaining, "While all of the students you will see tonight are here in New York to perform as part of the choir in our final concert each of them auditioned for the Global Orchestra as a soloist, and this is their opportunity to show us what they can do."
And that's exactly what they did! Students from Year 13, all the way down to Year 5, wowed the audience with their diverse vocal sound and range, and the maturity and confidence of their performances. The concert lineup included the Gershwin's "Summertime", pop favourites Bastille's "Pompeii" and "Mercy" by Duffy, along with Jazz legend Etta James' "At Last" and "When I Look at You" from The Scarlett Pimpernel. Performing her own composition, "I Don't Want to Miss You", 14-year-old Millie Stevens from The British International School of Charlotte showed great composure and confidence, receiving an extra loud ovation from a very appreciative audience.
The evening wasn't only for the singers. Several of the senior orchestra members also had the opportunity to showcase their skills, giving polished performances on cello, violin, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone and flute.
Lina Pantalone, mother of Arianna who sang "When I Look at You", flew in from Shanghai especially for the event and enthused, "It was so beautiful to see many talented kids singing and playing instruments beautifully straight from the heart.”
After a sightseeing day in New York, and a day of drama, music and dance workshops at The Juilliard School, the students performed the final concert at the DiMenna Centre before an audience of family and invited guests.
I’m Katya, a Year 12 student at the British International School of Chicago, South Loop where I’ve attended since Year 4. Last month, I was lucky enough to participate in a week-long event at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, made possible thanks to the collaboration Nord Anglia Education has.
