Healthy body, Healthy Mind in KS2

Monday to Friday, most of our KS2 students consume at least half of their meals at school. Good nutrition at school is key and is something that we strongly promote at St Andrews. Throughout KS2, the students are exposed to the message of the importance of a balanced diet. These are specifically taught and highlighted in the topics “All About Me/Fit For Life” in Year 3 and “Keeping Healthy Year 5.

At lunchtimes we always promote having a balanced plate, consisting of the right balance of fruits and vegetable, proteins and carbohydrates (rice, pasta etc.). It can be difficult to ensure that children get the balance right, but we need to make the effort to help them make the right choices.

If you are sending in snacks for your children, make sure that you help them eat healthily by giving them snacks that will provide the required energy without being high in fats and sugars. It’s time to ditch the Pringles and hit the fruit, leave the Lays and love the seeds and grains.

Water of Life

If you’ve been in the area near the Year 6 quad or in the R Building over the last week, you’ll have noticed that our new water dispensing machines have been installed. These will replace the old bottled water coolers, providing us with filtered, chilled drinking water and helping reduce the amount of paper cups that are wasted each year. Each machine includes a carbon filter, helping remove impurities from the water, making it safe to drink. The machines offer a drinking fountain and water bottle filling facility which will help to ensure that the children have access to their required daily water requirements: 5 glasses (1 litre) for 5 to 8 year olds. 7 glasses (1.5 litres) for 9 to 12 year olds.

To help encourage the students drink more water, we ask that they bring a water bottle to school with them each day that can be used with our new machines and means that they can have access to drinking water in class throughout the day. Keep an eye out in the school shop for our very own St andrews branded water bottles, but until then, any water will do (ideally 500 ml to 1 litre). Before sending in the bottle, make sure it’s clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Flu Vaccination

There is still time to sign up for the vaccination which will be provided by Samitivej Children’s hospital, but we need to confirm final numbers a few weeks in advance of the visit to ensure that they bring enough doses. The permission sheets will be sent home with the children next week.

On the day of the vaccination, the medical team will be set up after 1pm for parents to collect their children for the vaccination and then take them straight home.

*Please note that School staff are not able to take the children for their vaccination.

Update to  KS2 Reading Workshop: new start time
