Staff Profiles: Ms Ashley

Ashley Hutchison

Head of Drama

My love for teaching was strongly fostered when I began my undergraduate degree studying Dramatic Arts in Education at Brock University in Ontario, Canada. A strong component to my degree was to collaborate with a variety of schools to develop art based programs and curriculums. Through my degree, I also had the privilege of traveling to countries like Jamaica, where we implemented arts based programs for local children who might not otherwise have been exposed to learning through the lens of drama.

My experiences in university solidified my love for drama, teaching, and travelling, which ultimately set the tone for my career. I pursued my studies by obtaining a Bachelor of Education at the University of Toronto, and I have since lived and worked in Los Angeles, London, and now Bangkok.

I was lucky to gain many diverse learning and teaching experiences in these countries, including seeing the acting industry first hand in LA, the enriching time I spent teaching acting and directing for a London theatre arts school, the opportunity to teach both drama and English for UK high schools, and leading and developing drama programmes for International schools in Bangkok.

From these valuable periods in my professional life, I have gathered a wide breadth of insights into the phenomenal role that the arts can play in a young person’s education as well as how I as a teacher and mentor can best support students in their learning and prepare them for life outside of school.

Outside of teaching, I love volunteering, fitness, and acting myself.

I was drawn to St Andrews for several reasons. On a professional level, their connection to Juilliard not only helps to support creative development for students but for teachers alike.

I thoroughly appreciate the high regard for the arts that St Andrews holds. This school understands the value and life skills associated with creativity and that participating in subjects like drama has a positive impact on the social, mental, and academic development of students.
