Staff Profiles: Mr Gary

 Gary Davidson

Head of History and Extended Essay Coordinator

After completing my degree in History at Newcastle University, I was awarded a place in the Urban History department at Leicester University to complete a trans-national course in conjunction with Leiden University. From here I went onto complete my PGCE in History before starting work in an academic secondary school in Derby. The 5 years I spent there were truly rewarding, affording me the opportunity to teach across the key stages and ability ranges.

I arrived here at St. Andrews International School Bangkok during 2003 and have seen it develop from a small, primary-based school, with 15 students in High School, to its present thriving state. As Head of History, I have been fortunate to teach a number of brilliant students who have been eager to learn and shown total commitment to the school. Additionally, I have been lucky to lead school trips to Vietnam and Singapore to provide further opportunities for our students.

As an individual I have always enjoyed sport, both watching and participating. Alas, my football team, Leeds United, is still struggling but I remain optimistic for the future. In the meantime I will continue to follow them from afar and encourage my son to do the same. Though I might not be able to compete at a level I would like, I still enjoy running and cycling, particularly away from the Bangkok traffic.

St. Andrews is a truly unique place to work for a number of reasons. However, by far the most important is the student body. The children who I have been fortunate to teach during my time here have made coming into work a pleasure.

"Mr. Gary is a unique History Teacher in that he can teach the equivalent of several university lectures in the span of a single lesson through a combination of precise language, an in-depth understanding of a wide range of topic, and subject-specific humour that keeps us engaged with the lesson."

"He encourages us to question and analyse the learning material in order to gain not only knowledge but also understanding."

"His dedication to his teaching and his pupils is incredibly encouraging, inspiring his students to achieve their greatest potential."
