Staff Profiles: Ms Amy

Amy Bonehill

Director for WS Counselling Services &Wellbeing

After completing a BA in Criminology and History I was fortunate to gain a newly developed position of Non-Teaching Head of Year in a successful and diverse comprehensive school in Sheffield. This experience was a crash course in counselling and conflict resolution. I understood then that my passion was to support young people overcome their challenges; to empower them to thrive. I decided to train as a young person’s social worker and gained my MA in Social Work at the University of Sheffield.

Through the rigorous training I worked with many inspiring and resilient young people in different environments. After graduation I worked for the Youth Offending Service and within a Home Office Secure Children’s Unit. It was through this work I was fortunate to work with wonderful psychologists and psychiatrists that supported me to develop my counselling skills. The unit was challenging and inspiring and shaped my belief that young people can, with the right support, find the resilience to thrive and be happy.

However, I had always had the desire to travel and after several years of work I decided to travel as much of the world as possible. After a year of travelling I found myself wanting to work again with young people and took an opportunity to work for a NGO in Cambodia. It is really a perfect combination of my interests and passions that I am now working as the School Counsellor at St. Andrews; I can support the wonderful young people and still have the adventure of learning about the world.

I have always been drawn to understanding different cultures and had dreams of exploring the world. As a small girl I would make my friends test me on names of capital cities and spent many hours daydreaming over maps and globes. Therefore, it was no surprise to my friends and family when I finally made the choice to travel the world. I packed my backpack, quit my job and travelled through South America, Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia. That is still my interest; dreaming and planning trips to different countries.

Travel is a little different these days as now I have a baby daughter but I still love to explore even if it’s less adventurous. My families’ next big adventure is to drive through East Africa. In the meantime I enjoy exploring Bangkok as a mum - it’s a whole new city!

As soon I visited St. Andrews I realised it was a warm and unique place. For me it was the first time to discover a school outside the UK which reflected my own beliefs of inclusion and community for every student; a place for every student to reach their full potential.

I am delighted to be working in such a wonderful school; the staff, students and parents all contribute to create a truly vibrant and caring environment.
