Our bespoke Primary curriculum has been meticulously designed to provide an academically rigorous yet truly holistic educational experience.
Inquiry-based learning (IBL) is the cornerstone of the curriculum. IBL encourages students to actively explore and construct knowledge by engaging in real-world learning experiences. This not only deepens their conceptual understanding, but also nurtures essential skills, such as collaboration, communication, and problem-solving.
Our teachers deliver IBL across the subjects. In Primary, our students’ focus is English Language Arts, Mathematics, and STEAM, as well as Social Studies, Visual Arts, and Music. We also teach Spanish, Mandarin, and French.
We’ve carefully crafted our international Primary curriculum to provide a dynamic and engaging learning experience for our students in the Dominican Republic. This includes the use of innovative methodologies, such as the Workshop Model, Small Group Instruction, Science of Reading, and Balanced Literacy.
The Workshop Model is a particularly important component of our curriculum. This research-based instructional framework promotes student-centered learning and differentiated instruction. Through mini-lessons, independent work time, and shared sessions, students take part in learning experiences that are tailored to their individual needs and interests. This gives them ownership of their learning and ensures every child receives the perfect balance of support and challenge.
Grading (SBG) is an innovation in education that focuses on learning and helps increase achievement.
At SGS we measure student learning to understand instructional effectiveness using standards-based grading. Instead of a single overall grade, we divide the subject into smaller “learning objectives”. Each objective is a teachable concept that students must master by the end of the course. Throughout the school year, student learning is recorded on each objective. Teachers monitor student progress, provide appropriate feedback, and tailor instruction to meet student needs.
Standards based instruction helps guide the planning, implementation, and assessment of student learning. The use of standards to streamline instruction ensures that teaching practices deliberately focus on agreed upon learning targets. Expectations for student learning are mapped out with each prescribed standard.
