St Andrews student explores innovation at MIT

MIT

Early this November, Arhamm, a Year 12 student at St Andrews International School Bangkok, recently had the incredible opportunity to attend the MIT Student Workshop in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This annual event brings together selected students from Nord Anglia schools worldwide for a week of hands-on STEAM learning and collaboration with experts at one of the world’s leading universities.

Arhamm was chosen for this experience after submitting a video and poster that demonstrated creativity, curiosity, and community—values that MIT champions. His work stood out for its thoughtful approach and originality.

Reflecting on the experience, Arhamm shared:
“The MIT Trip in Boston was a fascinating experience for me. More than that, I enjoyed collaborating with students from different countries whom I had worked with throughout the trip. From the technology at MIT to the students of MIT, all helped me learn something new and gave a new perspective to my learning experience.

The best tour I had of MIT was the Glass Lab. In the lab, they showed us how glass is made, at what temperatures, and how you can create unique designs with glass, such as curves. The best part was learning how they added colour to the glass, using sand-like particles. The most memorable part of the trip for me was the coaster-making workshop, where we laser-cut wood into shapes of coasters with MIT written on them. I now have a souvenir to always remember my trip to MIT.

Apart from the on-campus activities, the Boda Borg Escape Room was another adventure, where we set out in groups to solve various puzzles. Each Escape Room was different and complex in its own way, and it took fundamental problem-solving skills to solve them.
The teachers and students on the trip from all around the world were very friendly and pleasant to stay with. A special bond was created with them within just five days.

Another special mention of the trip was the Harvard University tour on the last day of the trip. The architecture in Harvard is very different from MIT's, and so is the vibe of the place. It was an unforgettable trip with loads of memories.”

This experience reflects St Andrews’ commitment to providing students with opportunities that spark creativity and curiosity while preparing them for the future. Through our collaboration with MIT, students like Arhamm gain exposure to cutting-edge ideas and global perspectives, skills that will serve them well in any path they choose.
