We are now looking for items to be donated for one of our favourite stalls at the Summer Fun Day, the Tombola. You may remember the amazing hampers which were raffle prizes at the Christmas Bazaar. These hampers were donated by our primary school parents. The Tombola gives NAIS Pudong Secondary parents the chance to take the reins by donating items to the Tombola.
The Tombola organisers need Secondary parents to dig deep into your cupboards over the next two weeks and have your children or their bus monitors bring the items to Mr Howard’s office on the ground floor of C block by Monday 30 May. The sorts of items that you may wish to donate are bottles of beer, wine or spirits, cans of soups/fruit/vegetables, jars of sauces, even unwanted and unopened beauty products such as creams or shampoos. As long as the items are not perishable, opened, or will melt in the Shanghai summer, then they are very welcome.
The Global Campus and Creative Arts Competition
Global Campus are challenging students to illustrate the winning stories that will be published in the Creative Writing anthology this year.
This year students are not limited to illustrations. They can create sculptures, take photographs, make a mosaic etc.! The piece of visual arts created must be inspired by one of the winning stories. Students can choose a story to work from by clicking on the link below or signing into the Global Campus Competitions page.
Students should choose a story from a student at a different school to your own. One image per story will be chosen to go alongside it in the book, so to be in with a better chance, they should try and choose a story different than their friends and classmates.
Students don't have to illustrate a story from their age group; they can choose a story from a different age category if they want.
Read to Feed
This term, we will be raising awareness and funds for one of our partner projects, Read to Feed. Read to Feed is a sponsored read organised by the agricultural charity Heifer International.
Heifer International work in China with impoverished rural communities, helping them to become self-reliant and sustainable in their farming practices. They do this through donating livestock to farmers and teaching families how to care for the livestock without harming the environment. Each family receiving the gift of animals agrees to pass on offspring or an equivalent to another family.
Last year, as a school we raised an amazing 29,832RMB which went to supplying farmers in Yanglin Village (2,300km from Shanghai) with Tibetan pigs. Families living in this village, live in very difficult conditions, with farmers often earning only a few thousand RMB per year. The gift of a pig, may seem quite simple but it can help to raise a family’s economic prospects, send their children to school and break the cycle of poverty. More importantly, the project is sustainable as each recipient family also returns the favour to others in the village, thus helping an entire village to escape poverty.
We are hoping that all students in Y7-Y9 will get involved. Each student will receive sponsorship packs from their Form Tutors. There will be individual and class prizes and certificates for most books read and funds raised.
Students will need to return their completed sponsorship forms and donations by Friday 27th May 2016. This can be returned to their Form Tutor or to the Secondary School Secretaries.

Music with Mr Bailey
In Year 8 Music, we have been looking at our Juilliard core work ‘The Magic Flute’ and comparing it to a Musical. Pupils have been studying voice types, song types and learning about how words are set to the music. They have also been comparing the role of the Overture in both Opera and Musicals and looking at how this piece of Music, played at the start, can contain the information for the entire show.
English with Mr Watson
This term’s topic is persuasive writing and having learned and revised what persuasive techniques are, Mr Watson’s set have written a persuasive letter to convince the Head of Secondary to abolish school uniforms! Let’s see how persuasive they have been…
We have also had a look at some famous political speeches over time ranging from Martin Luther King (to tie in with a recent Year 8 History topic) to George W Bush and including Nelson Mandela. We are exploring how politicians have used persuasive devices to convince others of their views; it’s been a revealing and exciting topic.
Elodie 8C for History
During History this week, we have been learning about the opium wars and how they affected China, and England. The opium wars were very unfair. The Nanking treaty that the two countries made at the end of the war was not good for China because England had officially won, and they were able to decide the terms of the treaty. We are then going to review this topic, in preparation for the exams.
Ehsaan 8C for ICT
This week in ICT, we are programming on Scratch. We get the instructions from a document telling us how to make a car game. For this to work we need to follow the instructions exactly. If we fail to follow the instructions then the game will not work. The programming instructions on Scratch are basic, but when you have to put it in the script it gets a lot harder.
Chiara 8C for French
In French this week we are learning about 'J'ai mis dans ma valise', (I put in my suitcase). We learnt new words for everyday items that we pack in our suitcases and we were putting them into sentences. For example 'J'ai mis dans ma valise mes vêtements', which translates to; 'in my suitcase I put my clothes'. For homework we had to make a video of us packing our suitcases and saying what we put in our suitcases. After we had watched the videos we sang a song to help us remember the phrases and items that we put in our suitcases.
Yukiko 8C for English
In English at the moment, we are learning about persuasive language and techniques. We watched a video of Martin Luther King’s ' I have a dream ' speech. Then we practised using the 'AFOREST' and 'PERSUADE' techniques in paragraphs. Once we gathered together all we had learned, we had a mini-assessment. After that, we looked at some of the Jack Petchey’s 'Speak out' challenge finals, and we made a little speak out challenge just between our class. We could only make notes on 3 post-its to help us, so we had to improvise the rest with only a day to practice. Today, I presented mine and it went quite well as many people laughed which was my intention, but I was extremely nervous. Overall my English class is very fun because my teacher is very chirpy and my classmates are very communicative as well as hardworking and focused.
Danny 8C for Art
This month in Art, we started do build our flower structure with iron wires. It was really challenging and we still enjoyed it a lot. We used tools to cut the wires and used sponges as the leaves. Some groups have already started to cast it. Overall, it was really fun and all of us enjoyed it.
