I qualified as a teacher in 2003. Prior to moving to Beijing in 2013, I taught in schools in both London and Brighton. In Brighton I co-ordinated Maths and Assessment and was KS2 Leader. During my final year, I took on the role of Acting Deputy Head. In 2012 I undertook the Primary Maths Specialist Teacher Programme at Brighton University which allowed me to explore in more depth the ways in which children learn and how a creative Maths curriculum can be developed in primary schools.

My journey into teaching began whilst studying for an undergraduate degree in sociology, in Sheffield, England. As part of the course, I completed a work placement in a School Sports Partnership, which involved helping to deliver PE lessons in a range of schools. I thoroughly enjoyed working with children of all ages, although it was working with primary school children that I enjoyed most. This experience really ignited my passion for teaching and following my undergraduate degree, I completed a PGCE course at the University of Birmingham, in my home city.

Choosing to become a primary school teacher is the best decision I have ever made. I can’t imagine having any other job. Every day is different, every child is unique and you embark together on a learning journey of discovery with lots of laughs and smiles along the way. At the beginning of my career, three years were spent in Scotland gaining experience in all stages of Primary. My first year of teaching was spent on Isle of Islay, a beautiful remote island off the west coast of Scotland. For the last four years I have been teaching on the sunny island of Cyprus. Teaching and living abroad has been a thoroughly rewarding experience for me.
