In early October, North Broward Preparatory was recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2016–2018 for its iLearning program, which emphasizes delivering personalized learning through the use of Apple technology.
The Apple Distinguished designation is reserved for programs that meet criteria for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence, and demonstrate Apple’s vision of exemplary learning environments. “This distinction is an honor and a testament to the dedication of our faculty and students in their pursuits of meaningful, connected 21st century learning experiences. The collaboration and support of our community members have enabled us to integrate technology and provide students with optimal tools for learning and problem solving," said Elise Ecoff, Headmaster.
Our iLearning program began in 2011 with the integration of iPads in our preschool classrooms. By the 2012-2013 school year, we implemented a 1:1 iPad program in grades 4-5 and maintained access to 1:1 ipads for grades Pre-K to grade 3. Teacher iPads, MacBooks, Apple TVs and widescreen projectors in all classrooms and our 24 station iMac Lab provided the functionality to enhance our differentiated, personalized learning program.
Examples of the daily application of our iLearning model include digital storytelling, math and language iAssessments through Explain Everything app, and collaborative creation. Each of these tools further emphasizes our focus on problem solving, critical thinking and use of technology in teaching.
The school’s Touchpoint curriculum is a highlight of our program, in which students undertake a yearlong study on a topic of global significance, such as poverty or deforestation. Students use video conferencing to collaborate with our Nord Anglia Education Schools from 43 countries around the world through our Global Classrooms.
Faculty members also collaborate with students and one another to make thinking visible and to document the processes of learning and reflection. Students design iMovies, ebooks, and create individual enrichment projects that further demonstrate student achievement and understanding of a particular learning concept.
The selection of our school, PreK3- 12th grade) as an Apple Distinguished school highlights our success as an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment. As an example, teachers use iAssessments that indicate each step a student is using to solve a specific problem. Students are also introduced to programming as part of their everyday learning allowing them to have a deeper understanding of concepts like logical sequence.
