Jonathan Garnett-Smith

Year 1 Teacher

After I qualified as a teacher in 2007, I spent two years working as an ECaW (Every Child a Writer) Tutor, and providing regular supply cover to a number of local schools in Plymouth, my home town. Within this time, I also taught at St Andrews School, Turi in Kenya for 3 months. In 2010, I became the Head of PE at Riverside Community Primary School on a one year contract, before moving to Woodford Primary School for my most recent long term post in September 2011.

Whilst at Woodford, I developed my love for Mathematics, becoming the Head of Maths in 2014. In this role I have developed the whole school’s approach to mastery for all children, and have recently had an article on my work, “The Balancing Method”, published in the NCETM’s Primary Magazine. I have also provided support and training to the other subject leaders across the city.

I love football, and am a huge Manchester United fan. As well as coaching football for many years, I also enjoy directing school plays, with my most recent play, “In the Shadow of the Quarks”, performed at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth. I love cycling and skiing. I am currently writing a children’s book, and one day I would like it to be a Christmas best seller.
