Profile - Andrew Hallas

Assistant Head of Secondary (Sixth Form)

After completing my PGCE at Exeter University I started my teaching career on the beautiful Isle of Wight in September 2000.  I feel very fortunate that fifteen years on and three schools later, I am still as passionate as ever for both my subject and teaching and very much look forward to the next chapter of my career at the British School of Guangzhou. My last role in the UK was as Head of Geography and Post 16 Enrichment at a large and successful 14-19 school in Leicestershire.  During my nine years in this role I personally taught over 350 A level and well over 900 GCSE Geography students.  I therefore have a deep understanding of the pressure and demand of key stage 4 and 5 and very much look forward to nurturing the next generation of students at BSG.

I believe that like students, teachers should always be looking to develop and embrace the ever-changing world we live in.  Over the last three years I have completed the National Qualification in Senior Leadership and taken on a role as a lead teacher where I explored realistic ways to make the curriculum more accessible.  I have always taken an active interest in cutting edge developments in teaching and learning and look forward to using what I learnt in my new role at BSG. Being a Geographer at heart it is the sense of adventure that led me to casting my eyes over the international job page of the Times Educational Supplement.

When I saw the Head of Humanities vacancy at BSG, it seemed perfect as I was looking for a highly successful British School in an exciting and dynamic part of the world, and early on my hopes and expectations have more than been realised.

When not at school I enjoy travelling and look forward to further exploring SE Asia and Oceania with my wife and young daughters.  I am also an avid Liverpool fan and was delighted to find out that I can watch more live matches on TV here than back in the UK.  I enjoy cooking, and when not rustling up some of my own new dishes, I look forward to satisfying my taste buds in the many wonderful restaurants Guangzhou has to offer.
