Early Years Teacher - Vicky Whieldon

SEN Teacher & Speech Therapist

I have always had an aspiration to work with children and young people and I knew that this was the area that I wanted to build my career around. I studied and trained as a Speech and Language Therapist in the UK and went on to work in a special school for 3 years. This was quite a unique school as I had the opportunity to co-deliver elements of the curriculum alongside teaching staff whilst also delivering therapy. This certainly gave me a ‘taste for education’ and I soon decided that working within schools was where I wanted my future to be.

My research led me to the British School of Guangzhou and many people told me about its excellent reputation. I was thrilled to accept a teaching role in the Foundation Stage.

I am particularly passionate about working with children with Special Educational Needs as this is where my training as a Speech and Language Therapist is most applicable. There is a huge overlap between ‘good SEN practise’ and ‘good educational practise’ in general. I am driven to combine my teaching experience and specialist training to create an empowering learning environment and make a positive difference to children’s lives and development.

I am very enthusiastic about my career and I am driven to do my job to the best of my ability. What I love about being both a teacher and Speech and Language Therapist is that every day is different and my learning never stops. I also thrive when I am part of a team and feel that it brings out the best in me when I can work with other committed professionals.

Outside of work, I love to travel and experience new cultures. There are so many fantastic destinations in and around Asia! To relax, I like to read, socialise and try out new restaurants.
