4th November 2016

This week in their English lessons, the children have been recounting what they did on their holidays.  They used photographs to help them plan and prepare their writing.  They prepared a writing plan for their recount which included key vocabulary including; nouns and adjectives. Finally, they completed their recount in their books, taking time to check their writing for punctuation and spelling.

This week the children have been reviewing what they have learned so far in Year 1.  We have looked at counting, addition, measurement and shape.  Next week the children will be carrying out first term assessments to inform next steps teaching.

Project Work

This week the children started their new project ‘Let’s Celebrate’.  The children looked at different celebrations across the world and thought about the things that make a good celebration.  They used this to plan their own celebration in class which included; music, dancing, games and decorations.

This week, the children learned about words related to their neighbourhood, such as; school, park, supermarket, playground, bus stop, MRT station and hospital etc. They learnt how to construct a sentence using ‘I go to…’  They also engaged in various activities to apply their learning in context such as; playing charades, role playing, flashcard games and guessing games. Online flashcards will be introduced in the next Weekly Round Up Email.

This week, the children have been learning to move commands, in addition they have been learning new code to allow them to complete an action.  The new code allows the bee to collect nectar and make honey.

Physical Education

This week in PE, the children have been learning how to dodge by changing speed and direction quickly and unexpectedly. In swimming the children have been continuing to practice their freestyle arm pull with the main focus being on the correct breathing technique.

This week all Year 1 students were formatively assessed using the three aspects of the Juilliard Learner Profile, ways of being, thinking and doing. This included a focus on collaboration, curiosity and perception.

The children have received their new spellings this week.
