17th February 2017

This week in English, we have been focusing on learning and practising using a range of new sentence structures to enhance our writing. We have used Alan Peat’s sentence structures, and now know how to use 3_ed, verb, person and 2 pairs sentences. We will now make a conscious effort to embed these into our independent writing.

In maths this week, the children have revisited fractions, however this time taking it to the next level. Once they secured finding fractions of amounts, recognising equivalents and ordering fractions, then began converting between mixed number and improper fractions and adding and subtracting them. The students also worked on solving word problems and investigating fractions in different contexts.

Project Work

This is the last week of our Space Explorers unit and we have used it to investigate the International Space Station. We particularly focused on the technology, experimentation and daily life on board, as well as learning how the different countries involved have collaborated for mutual benefit.  This linked nicely with UN Day on Friday! Our next topic, They See the World Like This, will begin after half term.

This week, the students had general revision lessons on the vocabulary and grammar points learnt so far. They also completed a set of YCT assessment papers and discussions were made during the class.

This week in ICT we wer looking at the importance of using trustworthy sources when researching information for project work. Students are referencing valid sources and combining their findings with their own thoughts and ideas. The students have produced some excellent news reports about their IPC topic and they have included some images to support their work. If you would like the news report emailed home, please contact Mr Kinsella at Gareth.kinsella@dovercourt.edu.sg and he will be happy to help. Students are also welcome to add more information to this over the holiday break for an ICT certificate.

Physical Education

In swimming and PE lessons this week, we have been focusing on distance running, during athletics. The last lesson of this swimming unit has seen pupils put their learnt skills into water-polo matches, competing in mini teams.

This week, Year 5 performed percussion parts as part of a class orchestra performance. We also identified how simple rhythmic patterns interact with different layers through cyclic development.

Design & Technology

This week in Design and Technology, the children evaluated their teams’ towers and how well they worked as a team. They also reviewed safety and practiced their sketching skills.

  • Please see the spelling journal for spelling words this week.  Children should learn their spellings for a test. To be tested on Monday 27th February.

No other homework is set this week due to the half-term holiday – enjoy your break!
