    DCIS Proms 2016

2nd December 2016


This week, the children have been planning and writing their own ‘fan fiction’ stories for the Global Campus writing challenge. They studied some examples of the genre and carefully chose a story to adapt. They developed their understanding of using inverted commas accurately and have worked hard to embed these effectively to really bring their story and characters to life.


In maths this week, we continued to develop our knowledge of statistics.  We learnt how to calculate the mean, median, range and mode of different sets of data and also consolidated our learning on reading timetables using the 24 hour clock.

Project Work

In our project learning this week, we painted our Greek pots with traditional Greek patterns and scenes which depicted areas we have learnt about so far.  We evaluated them and reflected on how we could improve them.  We also started to learn about the Roman empire and compared it to what we have already learnt about the Greeks.


This week we introduced the seasons with different weather conditions such as hot, cool, cold, nice and warm etc. Students asked and responded their favourite season through speaking activities. In addition, we learnt the sentence structure “I like ... because ….”. Students engaged in Kagan activities such as Rally Robin and Rally Coach to practise their sentences.


In Computing this week, we have been doing some debugging.  Everyone who writes code makes mistakes and it's up to us to find and fix the bugs in our code. Students have been solving algorithm problems and working independently and in pairs to solve some difficult challenges. Students have been visiting the website Code.org to work on various skills.

Physical Education

During tag rugby, pupils have been working on how to beat a defender in an overload situation. In hockey, we have revisited basic passing and dribbling in small sided games.


In Year 5 music this week, students learned how the bass line of blues music is based upon notes of the primary chords and passing tones. We learned to play the three ‘Groovy Bass Lines’ that fit over a 12-bar blues structure, with some students playing primary chords simultaneously with the bass line. 

Design & Technology

Last week in Design and Technology the children completed their wall hooks and are very proud of their work. Please ask your child about how they made it, the tools they used and the processes they can now safely accomplish. This week we began to learn about structures and 3D geometric forms. The children will be applying this understanding to the engineering challenge of building a tower from dry spaghetti strands in the coming weeks.



  • Please see the spelling journal for spelling words this week.  Children should learn their spellings for a test and complete one of the spelling activities into their journal.  To be tested on Monday 5th December.
