    DCIS Proms 2016

14th October 2016


This week, the children have been developing their spelling, punctuation and grammar skills. They have carried out a range of activities to learn the terminology of grammatical terms and how to identify and apply these in sentences. They have also been developing their comprehension skills.


This week in maths, the children have been applying their skills learnt in fractions, decimals and percentages in order to be able to convert between them. Once the children were confident in converting more complex decimals into fractions and percentages, we then moved on to comparing and ordering mixed fractions, decimals and percentages and dividing decimal numbers by converting them into fractions. From here we went on to investigating recurring decimals through fractions and percentages and word problems.

Project Work

In Project this week we have:

  • Compiled and sorted research, looking at our notes and research to decide what information is important and how we can display our findings. 
  • Collated and presented all our findings from our research carried out on home and host countries, both geographical and historical. 
  • Ended our project by participating in a class quiz about our home countries

This is the final week of the topic of date. Students revised the sentence patterns about indicating a specific date in Mandarin including special dates such as birthday and public holidays etc. New words for day of week were also introduced in our lessons.


In computing this week the students have been experimenting with the website https://codecombat.com/play to learn about the programming software Python. They have been learning how the codes are set out and problem-solving. The students should try out this website during the holidays to improve their skills and become even better coders.

Physical Education

In PE lessons this week pupils have been working on attacking and defending skill in small-sided football games. In volleyball, they have been continuing to put learnt skills into game situations.


This week, students continued exploring ways in which improvisation is similar to spoken dialogue, particularly the use of repetition. We listened to one of the Juilliard core works, Blue Monk, and observed the ways repetition can be altered. We then learned the Blue Monk melody on the keyboard and reflected on its repetitive structure.

Design & Technology

This week in Design and Technology the children are continuing to learn how to mark-out work with precision and to safely drill holes. They are being introduced to using geometry to locate centres and to accurately measure locations for holes to be drilled. Also, they are being introduced to how to safely use the bench drill.


Following a school policy, there will be no homework set over the half term break.
