    DCIS Proms 2016

English

In English this week, the children have been focussing on explanation texts. They have researched and analysed a range of explanation texts and the children have also completed comprehension questions based on different texts. The children have created their own explanation text based on an animal.

Maths

In Maths this week we have been consolidating our learning from last term - we revisited the skills we developed through word problems and problem solving. We also used our cooperative learning and enquiry skills in order to solve group mathematical challenges and investigations.

Project Work

This week in Project we have started our new topic on investigations. We began by completing a murder mystery investigation which involved using and applying our problem solving skills. Next, we completed the knowledge harvest, which involved exploring and defining new scientific vocabulary. Lastly, we received our forensic scientist training criteria; we will be working on this next week.

Mandarin

Based on the learnt numbers and the structure of date, this week, we focused on time. We have learnt the basic characters for the hour and the minute. Approximate expression about time ‘几点了?’, ‘xx点了’ and accurate expression about time structure time ‘xx点xx分’ was introduced. An online flashcard will be introduced in the next Weekly Round Up Email.

Computing

In computing this week, students have been reviewing repetition in coding and learning how to break codes into smaller chunks. They have also looked at the purpose of functions. They have linked these concepts to an activity based around the game Minecraft and they can continue to develop their skills by revisiting the following website https://studio.code.org/s/mc/stage/1/puzzle/1

Physical Education

In PE lessons this week pupils have been working on attacking and defending skill in small-sided football games. In volleyball lessons, pupils have been continuing to put learnt skills into game situations.

Music

In music this week, students observed how Thelonious Monk performed Blue Monk in an ensemble, then applied the musical elements they saw of rhythm, articulation and dynamics to their own performance of Blue Monk. Some students were extended by combining this melody with block seventh chords to harmonise the tune over a 12-bar structure.

Design & Technology

This week in Design and Technology the children are continuing to learn how to mark-out work with precision and to safely drill holes. They will be using the bench drill to drill a hole accurately at 60 degrees.

Homework

English:  Children will choose a scientific invention, discovery and research about this. We have discussed these in the lesson today. They will need to find out information on this as well as images and diagrams. This will be used to support them when writing an explanation text next Wednesday and Thursday. Please bring this printed information to school by Wednesday. You do not need to produce an explanation text at home. You are required to complete the research.

Maths: Children will complete a Maths investigation to consolidate their enquiry skills from the week.

Project:  As part of our project work the children are going to complete a scientific experiment. This week the children need to think of a question that they can test in preparation for the following week’s homework. Over the course of the next 3 weeks, the children will be carrying out these experiments, recording their results and forming conclusions. As our exit point, we will have a Science Day where the children will present their experiments and what they have found out.
