    DCIS Proms 2016

9th December 2016

In English this week the children have been writing flashbacks for the animation ‘The Piano’. They are able to recognise examples of flashbacks in books, films and plays and explain why they are effective. They have developed their understanding of the structure of a flashback paragraph and how it builds from the introduction and spark. In addition, they were encouraged to up-level their descriptions in order to engage the reader.

This week in Maths we have looking at 3D shapes and their nets. We created 3D shapes using nets, identified which nets create which shapes and drawn our own nets. We then applied these skills to some practice assessment questions. We have also practised our mental maths skills.

Project Work

In project this week the children began their forensic science investigation to solve who committed the murder crime. They were provided with evidence and needed to plan and carry out fair test investigations to work out each clue. This gave them the opportunity to apply their skills that they developed during the training weeks.

This week, students finished the topic of daily routine, started the termly culture topic – Panda. In the culture lessons, we did many activities such as videos watching, coloured pictures, panda puppet, drew pictures, paper folding about the panda etc.

In computing this week we have been discussing the impact that giant companies such as Apple, Google and Microsoft have had on the computer industry. We have been developing our design skills on Christmas characters as well as testing our knowledge of hardware devices. Students have followed this by developing and furthering their coding skills.

Physical Education

In PE lessons this week, pupils have revisited basic passing and attacking skills, whilst also looking at defending during tag rugby. In fitness lessons, the classes have been undertaking circuits with the thoughts of how this could be transferred to a specific sport.

This week in music, we learned about the origins of Jazz through the development of the blues in activities that build cultural awareness. This is related to the core work, Blue Monk, which the class have been performing and adapting their own improvisations to.

Design & Technology

Last week in Design and Technology, the children learned about structures and 3D geometric forms, in particular tetrahedrons. This week the children practiced the safe use of the hot glue guns and the importance of wearing gloves to protect their hands. The children will be learning more engineering principles such as triangulation during a series of structure building challenges in the coming term.
