Lizzie Sowells

I was born and raised in Camden, North London. I gained a BA Honors in Social Sciences from Manchester Metropolitan University, specialising in Social Administration. Upon graduating, I worked in Political Public Relations, where for 7 years, I was engaged in event organising and fundraising.   I took a career break to raise my children at home and when my youngest child had started full time school I started volunteering as a reading mentor at a local school in London.  In 2009, we relocated as a family to Washington, DC. I continued volunteering as a reading mentor in the USA before joining BISW as a Learning Assistant in the Nursery in 2011.

I worked in Nursery for three years, where I became the Lead Learning Assistant for the school, and ran the Little Acorns parent and toddler group.  In 2015, I was very excited to be asked to become the teacher for the inaugural 2 Year Old Program. I am currently employed as a teacher in the 2 Year Old Program.

I feel very excited to get to work with the youngest members of our community as they begin their schooling and transition in to an early educational environment. It is a real joy to see the children making connections, developing independence and driving their learning forward. I have always had an interest in Child Development and Psychology and find my role both incredibly stimulating and rewarding.

British International School of Washington is a very special community where Early Years Education is taught through themes which give the children the opportunity to guide their own learning in a safe, fun and age appropriate way, supported by a very experienced Foundation Team.

Outside of school, I have two children, Izzy (13), and Henry (11), who keep me very busy along with my husband, David, (who is a Political Consultant), and my dog, Kipper (Wheaten Terrier).  I enjoy cooking, Pilates, and travelling.
