5 x[China] Art Exhibition

May 30 – June 1, 2014

Within restored room 503 of factory building no. 4,  the exhibition 5 x[China]  brings together contemporary art works of five foreign artists, who teamed up in order to make their mark on the city that they live in: Shanghai.

In their art work the essence of life in modern China is explored with a variety of mediums, while at the same time their diverse backgrounds are showing through in the way they treat the subject.

Ameet Gill’s paintings are symbolic and have a rich earthen sensibility. Her subjects are of a universal appeal, sometimes pulling from the past and flowing into the present, and sometimes capturing the unsung moments of daily life.

One of Janine van Herwaarden’s key themes is the hidden intensity and beauty of every day life moments and experiences. She often combines it with the beauty of imperfection: randomness and occurrence in a perfectly shaped object.

José Sintnicolaas creates impressions of simple and catching subjects of daily life, both in a realistic and abstract way. She sets the tone, light and colorful, and then leaves it to the imagination of the beholder to finish the work.

Loes Venker-de Noo’s work is about reflection. Reflection on why people do the things they do, why they make particular choices, and why they allow or don’t allow certain things to happen. She works mainly with fabrics, ready-mades and texts.

Dayang van Wezel-Salim is inspired by contemporary life around her. She uses a comprehensive collection of found papers and cards as her palette. The prints’ substances and movement of lines and forms together give her work a powerful expression.
