Ahoy There!

There were pirates and nursery rhyme characters galore at the Early Years Pirate Theme and Nursery Rhyme Day on Friday 25th September. The day was a celebration of the completion of the students’ topics and gave them the opportunity to display all they have learnt in the first half of Term 1.

Early Years Leader, Tamara Keenan, says the students in Nursery spent the day not only dressed to impress in their favourite nursery rhyme costumes, but also using lots of skills they have learnt through their topic. She explains, “The children sang songs and played games inspired by their learning in school. These focused on early literacy including rhyming words, developing their English language skills and their number recognition.”

Through these classic nursery rhymes, the students also delved into the expressive arts, singing, following rhythm and roleplaying characters.

Just down the corridor, it was a rather more rowdy affair, with pirates taking over the Reception rooms. A carousel of activities saw students visit each of the Reception classes to participate in pirate-themed games and activities.

Mrs Keenan explains, “The children were very enthusiastic to play physical games like Captain’s Coming which required them to follow instructions like ‘go to the top deck’ and ‘walk the plank’, honing and developing their gross motor skills.”

Students also created pirate-inspired artworks and played party games before tucking into a fabulous pirate feast. Mrs Keenan continues, “The Early Years team would like to thank the parents who generously supported this wonderful day by sending in specially prepared pirate food and ensuring the children looked the part on the day.”
