Making Music

Students in Years 4, 5 and 6 are getting a hands-on introduction to a range of musical instruments during their music lessons.

Starting with trumpet, flute and violin, the students were introduced to the instruments - how to assemble them, finger positions and playing techniques – and then encouraged to have a go!

As any musician will tell you, it is not necessarily easy to get a sound out of an instrument the first time, however, part of the idea is to teach perseverance. Director of Music and The Arts, Phillip Bailey says one girl, in particular, provides a great example. He explains, “There was one girl who could not get a sound out of the trumpet; however, she tried and tried and, after a full 15 minutes, managed to finally make a sound. The whole class cheered and she was awarded a House point for displaying such great perseverance.”

Our music teachers Mr and Mrs Bailey report a huge level of enthusiasm, as well as some great potential, and are keeping a close eye on students who show a particular aptitude.

Mr Bailey continues, “We want to engage as many students as we can in playing instruments; not solitary instruments, but ones which will allow them to play within ensembles. That’s an area of our music provision that we are very keen to build.”

After a period on trumpet, flute and violin, the students will move on to trombone, clarinet and cello to round out this period of musical discovery.

Any students who take a particular interest in an instrument and wish to try individual music lessons, will be able to use a school instrument for up to two terms free of charge.
