Year 5 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 5.

Information and Reminders

Tuesday 26th January - Year 5 Exhibition on The Great, The Bold and The Brave! We would like all children to come to school on this day dressed as either a Roman or Greek. Please visit the Year 5 corridor between 9.15-9.45am where the children will show you what they have studied. There will be tea and coffee available outside the Hive for parents before and after.

Tuesday 26th January - Academic Review Evening 17:00 - 20:00
Wednesday 27th January - Academic Review Evening 17:00 - 20:00

We will soon be starting our new topic - Being Human - at the end of January. Our entry point is for the children to meet people who are in professions or have an interest in helping people look after their bodies. Therefore, if you or someone you know is a doctor, nurse, dentist, optician, fitness instructor, yoga teacher, dance teacher etc... and would be happy to come in to school and give a little talk to the children on Tuesday 26th January between 2-3pm then please contact your child’s class teacher.

English

Next week in English, we will be improving our speaking and listening skills. We will be starting an exciting unit based on Nick Butterworth’s ‘The Whisperer’, a picture book for older readers that tackles some interesting moral and social issues. We will be orally retelling the story, mapping out the events, and experimenting with language and structure within the story. We will be examining and describing how sentence length can have an impact on the reader, and look at how the author uses this to create build-up and pace. We will also be identifying and replacing different descriptive techniques such as similes and replacement, and will use the illustrations as a model for our own sentence writing.

Maths

Next week in Maths, the children will solve problems using data. Line graphs will be used which will give the children opportunities to solve comparison, sum and difference problems. Interpreting line graphs is a key objective that will be one of the focuses of the week and will help children to obtain accurate information and answer questions correctly. Following on from this, data will be interpreted and plotted onto a line graph giving the children the challenge to generate their own questions. To finish the week, children will interpret timetables, gather important information and deduce what is needed from the available information.

Topic

Next week in Topic, the children will be busy working with other children across the year group to organise a particular piece of work that will be presented during the exit point. This will include looking at Greek architecture, how the Greeks performed in theatre and popular Greek myths. Warfare will be another part of the children’s presentation paying particular attention to the Persian war, Athens versus Sparta and how the Roman army functioned. As well as looking at Roman buildings the children will also present influential figures from the past such as Alexander the Great and Alfred the Great. To finish the week, the children will also find out how the Anglo-Saxons made peace with the Vikings and how tapestry tells us stories from this particular era.
