Letter from the Director of Music and the Arts - 29th January

My focus this week is on the Art Department.

  • B&B

Since the start of this year there have already been some wonderful and challenging pieces of art being produced. Our Year 7s are about to start their new sculpture unit based on the works of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Our Year 8s have begun to look at the more formal element of art and build on the skills taught last year, by concentrating on tonal shading and form. In Year 9, pupils are taking on possibly one of the hardest units of their artistic education which will result in students producing a self-portrait painting. A small example of our pupils’ outstanding work can be seen in the Exhibition Space next to the Auditorium, if you get time please take a moment to have a look at the celebration of their work.

I would also like to congratulate four remarkable students who have made us in the Arts at NAIS Pudong very proud.

Last term, Valerie Lua, Nishi Adminamozhi, Sisi Yang and Henry Luo’s artwork was selected to be entered for the Shanghai City Weekend annual Art competition. This is a prestigious competition that is entered by all international schools in Shanghai and regularly receives over 450 entries each year. Their artwork was short listed from all the artwork produced at NAIS Pudong for its accuracy and creativity, and is a strong example of the high caliber of art we produce at NAIS. Furthermore their artwork has been selected in the top 50 by Shanghai City Weekend, has been exhibited at the Hub shopping mall and each of these students has won an award for their work and efforts. Fantastic achievement!

Music

I am very pleased to see that our peripatetic music programme is really starting to grow. Many parents are taking up this fantastic opportunity to borrow a school instrument free of charge for their child to use while at NAIS Pudong. There are still more instruments available for children to use, so grab this chance while you can and before they are all gone. If your child is unsure about what instrument to play, ask them to speak to Mrs Bailey or myself and we can arrange a time for them to visit and try what is available.

Beauty and the Beast

Tickets will go on sale this coming weekend at the Temple Fair and after that they will be available from Main Reception. There are four performance nights, all starting at 7pm, to choose from; 8th 9th 10th & 11th March. There will be Adult tickets (IB students and older) and Child tickets (Year11 and lower). We are making the opening night a ‘Red Carpet’ event; come wearing your best dress or suit and enjoy sparkling wine and canapés before the show starts! There is no limit to how many tickets each family can purchase and indeed families can bring friends and other children not connected with NAIS Pudong. Younger children are also encouraged to wear their Belle, Gaston or Beast outfits.
