Year 5 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 5

Information and Reminders

Our exit point was a great success. It was lovely to see so many parents and I know the children really enjoyed sharing their knowledge.

The children also enjoyed our entry point. Thank you to the parents that shared their skills and volunteered their time.

Thank you to all parents who attended the Academic Review Evenings. If you were unable to attend the evenings, please contact your child's class teacher to make an appointment at a more suitable time.

We look forward to welcoming our Year 5 students back to school very soon!

Don't forget our Chinese New Year Temple Fair this Sunday from 11am to 3pm.

Friday 5th February - Chinese New Year dress up day

Friday 5th February - School closes for the Chinese New Year holiday and will re-open on Monday 15th February

The weather is very cold at the moment so please ensure your child has a coat to keep them warm at playtime.

English

Next week in English, we will continue to develop dialogue for our extracts of ‘The Whisperer’. We will continue to think carefully about our language choices, the purpose of embedding dialogue, and how dialogue should be laid out. After that, we will consider how we can imitate the author’s style by adapting it to create our own versions of the story. We will use the story as a basis for a long writing opportunity, where we will revisit all the skills we have focused on this term. Finally, we will develop our evaluative skills by reading through our own work, and the work of others, and considering how closely we have met the different Year 5 assessment criteria, and what needs to be done next to further develop our writing.

Maths

Last week in Maths, the focus was on number. We looked at improper fractions, mixed numbers, ordering and comparing fractions, percentages and equivalent fractions. This week, we will review the objectives of last week and clarify any misconceptions the children have with fractions, in particular with converting mixed numbers into improper fractions and vice versa. Additionally, we will focus on problems involving ordering fractions, which require a common denominator. The children will also solve problems involving number, they will multiply and divide numbers and decimals by 10, 100 and 1000 and explain what happens to each digit.

Topic

As scientists, we will be looking at the human skeletal system and learning the names of some important bones.  Then we will be discussing the functions of different bones and grouping them according to this. After this, we will start to look at how the heart works through role play, video clips and drawing colour-coded diagrams.  Next, the children will be carrying out investigations on pulse rate. For this, they will be making predictions, collecting results and drawing conclusions. Finally, we will consider how to keep our heart healthy by looking at diet and exercise.
