Year 3 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 3

  • A glimpse into the learning in Year 3 this week

Information and Reminders

  • Thank you to those who attend our Academic Review Evenings, it was a delight to see you.
  • Next Friday the children can come to school dressed in a Halloween costume. This is optional.
  • Homework is sent on Wednesdays and must be returned on Mondays. Please make sure you encourage your child to complete it on their own and inform us if they found the activity challenging so we can further support them in school. Weekly website links will be sent on Fridays.
  • Don’t forget to check Class Dojo to see how many House Points your child has been collecting and to see posts of what is happening in your child’s class.
  • Please note that due to the ACAMIS tournament taking place on Friday 28th October there will be no PE lessons for students.

 

STEAM Day – On Thursday, all of our students will be participating in STEAM Day. The children will come off timetable for the day and instead participate in three activities throughout the day, with their teachers, which will be STEAM based (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths). We are keeping these activities a tightly guarded secret until next week, but we can promise that the children will have a very exciting day next Thursday.

English

In English next week, we will finish our ‘Iron Man’ stories. We will write a recount of our trip to Maglev using the notes we make and the photos we take. We will plan and write a Halloween themed story.  In Guided Reading we will complete a range of reading comprehensions based on ‘Sports and the Olympics’. The children will be given pieces of texts and write the answers after reading to show if they understood what they read.

 

Maths

As starter activities next week we will focus on the three and four times tables. We will be working on improving our knowledge and speed of recall of these by playing games and completing challenges. Following on from this, we will be working on multiplication all of next week. We will begin by revising how to multiply a multiple of 10, before moving on to arrays. We will also be developing formal written methods of multiplication, with some children learning the grid method and some children learning an expanded method of multiplication. Some vocabulary that will be useful to practice is: times table, groups of, multiply, lots of, times, multiplication, multiplied by.

 

Topic

As Scientists, we will be planning and carrying out simple experiments, trying to answer the question; ‘What is air?’. We will be identifying ways we can prove that air is real, that it moves, and that it can push an object at different speeds. The children will have to decide how to plan and carry out a fair test, make predictions and interpret the results of their investigations. Moving on from this, we will focus on animals that fly. We will consider what features they have which allow them to fly while other animals cannot. We will use this information to custom design a paper glider, before having a competition to see which one glides the furthest.

In Computing we will be introducing our new unit of ‘We are programmers’. In this unit, the children will create an animated cartoon using characters they design. They will use a paint tool to create characters and backgrounds. They will then create an animation by translating a storyboard into a series of scripted instructions (program) for graphic objects.
