Year 1 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 1

  • Year 1 goes to the Circus Maximus

Information and Reminders

I am delighted to tell you all that it has been a fantastic week of real, practical learning in Year 1! The children have loved learning about the Roman Circus Maximus and we have all been so proud of the way they have worked and investigated as historians. I, personally, have received roughly 12 pictures of the Circus Maximus so far this week from my class!

We continue to look for parents who are willing to volunteer their time and read with our children. If you would like to help us at school, please send your child's teacher an email and we will find a time which suits us all.

Also, our current topic 'The Circus is Coming to Town' is almost finished so we will be hosting our Year 1 exit point on Wednesday 23rd of November (23/11/16). This is a chance for parents to come to our school and hear from the children about their learning during this topic. There will be activities led by the children for you to take part in and examples of their work displayed. Please come along if you have the time!

English

In English next week we will be racing forward in time to consider what the circuses of the future might look like. We will read the book 'Very Mixed-Up Animals' by Ian Jackson and then we will create our own bizarre circus animal for a future circus. The children will then describe their animal using different adjectives in their writing.

Maths

In Maths next week we will be learning about Time. Time can be a challenging concept for some children. Not only do they need to be able to read numbers from 1-12 but they also need to count in 5s, understand that a 1 on a clock face also represents 5 minutes and they need to be able to represent full, half and quarter turns. Topic

As part of our learning around 'Very Mixed-Up Animals' we will be using different painting techniques to create our own creature. We will explore different ways to mix powder paints and how we can use yellows and blues to create darker and lighter shades. We will also explore how we can use our paint brush to make different marks on the page which replicate an animals’ fur or skin.
