An overview of the week ahead in Year 6

  • Year 6 taking the lead

Information and Reminders

Parents and family members are warmly invited to attend our Project Week assembly performance on Thursday 17th November. Doors open at 2pm for a 2.20pm start. Students have been working on their performances this week to share their learning with you and the rest of the Primary School.

6A will be presenting about the lessons we conducted with the children at Dengfeng Kungfu School. 6B will be covering the Kungfu lessons and our visit to Shaolin Temple. 6C will focus on the Longmen Grottoes.

We welcome the Ralph family into Year 6, as Ciaran began life in 6C this week. Well done to Ciaran for settling so quickly, and to other Year 6 students who have made an effort to help him make friends.

Students can give their feedback to Insight Adventures via the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CL529FT

Next week we have a special visit from author David Greenberg, who is a published poet. He will be running a session with all Year 6 during the morning of Tuesday 15th November. All students and parents are also invited to a separate session at 6pm Tuesday evening.

This week’s picollage comes from Andrew Tsui.

6A – Lou Anne Senechal - For taking her class job seriously, being positive and consistently giving 100% effort!

6C - Ciaran Ralph: For having an excellent start to life at NAIS and settling in really well.

English

In English, we will analyse how paragraphs are structured and linked using conjunctions. We will examine this through a text about marina archaeology, relating to drowned cities of Egypt. We will also look at how poets play with language structure and sounds to create effects, by looking at a dialogue poem between a geologist and an oceanographer.

Maths

We will move on from our shape work into fractions, decimals and percentages. Students will learn to understand the concept of the proportion of amounts, and know how to express this as a fraction, decimal and percentage. Students will also learn how to compare fractions with unlike denominators, find equivalent fractions, simplify fractions and convert improper fractions into mixed numbers.

Topic

We will use Topic lesson time to continue practising for our assembly which will be shared with the whole of the Primary school on Thursday 17th November.

We will start our new Topic on Friday, which is the IPC Unit of ‘Making New Materials’. We will conduct our entry point in which we’ll investigate different types of ice. In this unit, we will experiment with different kinds of materials, and become cooks, chemists and creators of new materials.
