English

Next week in English, we will continue our work on Greek Myths and Legends. Having read the story of Pandora’s Box, we will then look at the story of Persephone, and begin to consider how the Greeks used storytelling to explain natural phenomena, such as the seasons. In spelling, we will be focusing on the ‘-cial’ and ‘-tial’ suffixes. Both are used to make the same ‘shul’ sound, and we will be looking at the rule to follow when selecting which suffix makes the correct spelling. We will also be looking at exceptions to this rule. If you want to work with your child on this at home, you could use the words and activities found on Spellzone website, a great starting place for online games and activities linked to spelling.

Maths

Next week in Mathematics, we will be revisiting division. Focusing firstly on the inverse recall of multiplication facts, we will be looking at how we use these acquired mental facts to support us in solving other problems. We will first look at how chunking can make ‘bus stop method’ division easier, and then we will revisit the formal written method for long division. After ensuring that we are confident in applying this independently, we will be problem solving linked to multiplication and division, and consolidating our understanding of the language of word problems. To support your child at home, please continue to revise times tables facts with them. You could use the following websites to help, where there are some great games available:

Topic

After our Greek Day, we are all ready to find out about the golden age of Greek culture. We will be finding out about the unification of the Greek city-states as a result of the Persian wars, and the rebuilding of Athens into a powerful cultural centre. We will then be finding out about Greek theatre, and considering the legacy of this on arts and culture today. If you want to find out more about this topic at home, BBC Bitesize has some great information pages. For more information, have a look at the class clips and learner guides here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/topics/z87tn39
