Year 6 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 6

  • Year 6 CISSA players celebrate their six wins

Information and Reminders

Congratulations to the two CISSA football teams who competed on Saturday 19th November at SAS Puxi. Mr. Lowery’s team, featuring six Year 6 boys, earned six wins out of seven games, while Mr. Northedge’s team (coached on the day by Mr. Lowe) , including Year 6 players, won five of their seven games. All players showed good teamwork and effort. Well done!

We look forward to seeing lots of students and families at the Christmas Bazaar this Sunday 11am-3pm. There will be lots of food, games and festive cheer to share with the NAIS community. Year 6 have created a ‘Guess the Santa’ game with prizes to be won.

On Monday, Year 6 have been invited to attend the Secondary School assembly to briefly share their experiences from Project Week. Students will also get chance to learn about Project Week trips in other year groups, to get a flavour of their future opportunities.

Finally, we have recently been notified that there have been some cases of Head Lice in Year 6. These students have been treated, but we would greatly appreciate it if you could check your child’s hair over the weekend to check for Head Lice or eggs.

6A – Tiffany Goh - for embracing challenge, setting high standards and always being positive.

6B – Teo Lechaczynski – for working scientifically to investigate materials.

6C –  Anish Trehan – for demonstrating a responsible attitude to his learning this week.

English

In English, we will start a unit called ‘Let’s Celebrate’, which looks at different cultural celebrations from around the world. We will consider and try to master how to distinguish between fact and opinion, looking at fiction and non-fiction texts. We will look at proverbs and idioms, which are absorbed into language from all over the world. We will practice reading comprehension through texts about festivals and national holidays.

Maths

We will continue to work on fractions, decimals and percentages. Students will learn to understand the concept of the proportion of amounts, and know how to express this as a fraction, decimal and percentage. Students will also learn how to compare fractions with unlike denominators, find equivalent fractions, simplify fractions and convert improper fractions into mixed numbers. We will also consider the effect of operations (+, -, x, ÷) on fractions and mixed numbers.

Topic

We will continue to explore our new Topic this week, which is the IPC Unit of ‘Making New Materials’. We have already looked at dissolving and melting; we will now look at conducting, chemical changes by baking cookies, and study insulation in more depth. Children will also consider the properties of materials and why they are used for different purposes. If you’d like to extend your child’s learning, you could look at kitchen utensils and talk about why they are made of metal/plastic/ceramic/wood, and why.
