English

In English this week we will continue to use ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ as the focus of our learning. Through reading the first few chapters of the story as a class, we will begin to develop our understanding of writing through studying Roald Dahl’s novel. In particular we will be looking at character descriptions, focusing on how the characters are feeling based on evidence in the book.  This will then be transferred to our own writing and giving our own descriptions more depth.  In addition to this we will also be looking at writing from the 1st person perspective to describe how a character feels.  Our grammar focus for the week will be looking at a range of conjunctions and using powerful adjectives, verbs and adverbs in our writing.

Maths

In Maths we will continue with our focus on shape, in particular symmetry.  In addition to this we will be learning that a shape and its reflection are congruent.  We will also be extending our understanding of different types of triangles and quadrilaterals.  We will be learning about the properties of these unique shapes and how to identify them as different from regular polygons.

Topic

In Topic we will continue to be learning as Geographers.  We will continue our work on the history of chocolate and also be looking more closely at the cocoa plant.  Comparing the cocoa tree to a tree in Shanghai, we will be able to unveil the differences there are in the conditions required for a cocoa tree to grow.  We will also look at the effects that cocoa bean production has on the rainforest, touching on topics like: slash and burn farming, deforestation and cash crops.
