The Christmas Bazaar

This was one of the biggest events run by the Community Group and they clearly put their hearts and souls into it! The Christmas Bazaar is run for two reasons; the first of which is as a focus for our community building work, to create a fun day for NAIS families and friends to come together and celebrate the festive season. The second, is because it is a great way of raising money for our partner charities: Baobei Foundation, Shanghai Sunrise, Lifeline Shanghai, the Hui Xing Orphanage, Heart to Heart and Stepping Stones.

Many activities were run and organised by students, parents and external vendors.  There was loads of things happening to keep students and parents entertained including the chance to meet Santa and have their photo taken, a Secret Santa cave, Santa’s letter-box for Christmas wishes, Christmas card making, cookie decorating, hair braiding, face painting, glitter tattoos and nail painting.  There were also lots of games kindly run by our teachers as well as activities led by Sports for Life, Bubble Football and the Shanghai Junior Golf Academy.

There were stalls for mums and dads to buy presents, with a variety of things on offer, from electrical good to clothes and jewelry!  There were lots of performances also throughout the day from the school’s choirs, including Rainbow Review, Cantabella, Senior Vocal Group and the Community Choir.

A big thanks to our fantastic Year 8 students: Rebecca Ludo 8B, Camilla 8B, Warren 8B, Abe 8B and Matias 8B. These students turned up to help with the Letters to Santa for the younger students and were excellent ambassadors of the school.

House Update

The House System got off to a flying start this term with the opening ‘Teamwork Thursday’ house completion. Students across the years in secondary competed in many different team-based activities in which house point were awarded to teams who collaborated the best.  Dao were the winners of this completion and led the leader board for about a week until the Dodgeball competition, where De house took the overall win that boosted themselves to the top of the leader board!

De also won the Internationalism Quiz that was run by the Senior Student Leaders, however it was Li house that pushed into the lead. Reason; well, it’s not simply the big competitions that put house points on the board. Students are constantly achieving HPs in class, in and around the school for good work, on an individual basis. These HPs are totaled every two weeks and added to the accumulator. Students in Li house were doing a great job inside the classroom and edged into the lead because of it!

De house soon pushed back into the lead with a win in the Perfect Pylons MIT competition. Though, once again, the battle at the top bounced back to Li after a big win in the Xmas card completion. After the count from Form Tutors this week though, it seems that De house have edged their way back to the top.

Who can predict what will happen next as students will battle it out for the best decorated Xmas tree in the house Xmas Tree competition. Over the next two weeks, students will have the chance to bring in their decorations and place them into the house box. On Friday 9th December, students will have 20 mins to decorate their tree. The winners will be judged by Mrs Wallace, Mr Lawrence and the Senior Student Leadership team. Good luck to all! Here are the lasted score on the doors:

1st Place                De          4529 points

2nd Place               Li             4374 points

3rd Place               Qi            4095 points

4th Place               Dao        3913 Points

Lesson updates

Mrs Procter for DT

In Design Technology this week, students in Year 8s are currently working in teams to create giant photorealist confectionary pieces. To do this, they are using the grid methods and painting techniques learnt this term. Watch out for the display this term and check out the photos on this week’s newsletter.

Ludovica Fabbricatore 8B for ICT

In ICT we have been learning about how to be safe on the internet or on any social media. We have also studied encryption, cipher and copyright. Here is the definition for each word. Encryption is when there is a coded message and you use a key to understand what it says. Cipher is an algorithm for performing encryption or decryption—a series of well-defined steps that can be followed as a procedure. Copyright is a law that says people are not allowed to create the same exact object with no different unless you have the original creator permission.

Cindy Tsai 8B for Mandarin
For mandarin, we learned some new Chinese vocabularies from some new stories in our textbook, the teachers told us to study these new vocabularies by writing the vocabularies and the pronunciation, then she told us to use this words to write a little story, which the story must include all the vocabularies in the right places. After that, the teacher will give us a test about the vocabularies. The last week and this week is all about the assessment. The assessment is about reading, speaking, and writing. Everyone is so nervous before the test but when we finish the test everyone feels okay.
Matias Maranon 8B for Geography
This week in geography we did some presentations about gabions, sea wall and revetments my group was gabions I thought we did quite well. We worked on 3 teams and the overall result was quite good. After we finished the presentation, we moved on to working and revising on our map skills.  Mrs. Kilpatrick gave us some good websites that we could use and that what we did in all the week.

Amanda Yong 8B for History

In history lessons last week we have been learning about the Industrial Revolution and how it has changed. We went through the textbook and found out some information and what could help us in our exam coming up. History class is very fun; we tried doing the mannequin challenge. On the first try, we didn’t do it so well, so we did a redo, this redo seemed perfect, well Mr Guiney told us. Unfortunately, the year 7’s beat us but a few percent and won by the best mannequin challenge, so Mr. Guiney gave us a new redo. This time it was amazing. No one moved, everyone was so still. We have our exam coming up on Wednesday. Tomorrow is our last day to revise.
