Stars of the Week

Star of the Week in 5A is Max Braumann, for utilizing his skills of persuasion in English.

Star of the Week in 5B is Abby Dexter, for her fantastic effort in handwriting, and for her thoughtful approach to all learning!

English

During the first week back, we will be revisiting our knowledge of cohesion: the words and techniques we use to link ideas between, within and across paragraphs. To do this, we will look at the way non-fiction texts are structured, and look at the themes, subheadings and topic sentences that help us to order our ideas. We will be breaking up paragraphs and rebuilding them based on textual clues. In spelling, we will return to the ‘i before e’ rule, paying particular attention to the instances where there are exceptions, and thinking of ways to remember these. More games and tips can be found on the Spellzone website.

Maths

When we return from the holiday, we will be looking at time in our Mathematics lessons. While some will be reinforcing their time skills in both analogue and 24 hour formats, most will be looking at converting different units of time.  The learning in Mathematics will be given a real life focus by looking at timetables from a range of settings and using them to solve worded problems.  We always try to get our students to apply their learning to outside of the classroom and with some of students having just travelled by different types of transport, this should be especially relevant.

Topic

In topic, the children will be learning about the different systems of government that existed in Ancient Rome: Monarchy, Republic and Empire. They will investigate reasons why Rome moved from a Republic to an Empire – to do this - they will be study two famous Romans – Julius Caesar and Caesar Augustus. Towards the end of the week, the students will compare similarities and differences between the Patrician and Plebeian classes in Roman society. They will finish the first week back by creating a mosaic for a Roman Villa.
