Stars of the Week

Star of the Week in 5A is Max Braumann, for utilising his skills of persuasion in English.

Star of the Week in 5B is Abby Dexter, for her fantastic effort in handwriting, and for her thoughtful approach to all learning!

English

Next week in English, we will be revisiting our work on modal verbs. We will look at instructional writing on a Christmas theme, and will look briefly at the idea of Christmas at Hogwarts as a stimulus for writing advice. We will use modal verbs, such as can, may and might, and modal adverbs, such as definitely, undoubtedly, or probably. We will look at instructional writing on the theme of Christmas, and will return to our work on subordinate clauses to extend our sentences here. Finally, we will write some wintry descriptive pieces building on our knowledge of adverbials – not just single adverbs, but also adverbial phrases to show time, place or number.

Maths

Next week in Mathematics, we will be problem solving. Using the various aspects of problem solving that have come up this term, we will be solving Christmas puzzles and brainteasers that force us to apply these skills. These include working systematically, working collaboratively, the process of elimination and using trial and error. We will look at using coordinates, mental maths skills, calculations involving money and fractions as part of these tasks, all of which will have a fun festive theme!

Topic

Next week, we will be completing and clarifying any understanding linked to Roman life and Roman sites across Europe. We will then have a Christmas focus to the week, so look out for the fabulous arts and crafts that will be coming home during the week. This will also include our Christmas STEAM day on Wednesday, where we will get involved in a variety of festive tasks that test our arts, engineering, scientific and mathematical skills! In philosophy, we will be looking at the themes of gratitude and kindness in keeping with the holiday spirit. You may want to look at the story of The Christmas Carol with your child at home, as this will feature in our discussions.
