Letter from the Head of Secondary - 18th February 2016

Happy New Year! I hope that the Year of the Monkey brings you good health and happiness! I hope also that however and wherever you spent the Chinese New Year, you had a wonderful and relaxing time with family and/or friends.

  • B&B

Returning to school, we are all bracing ourselves for an incredibly busy six weeks until the next break. Already this week we have welcomed Year 10 and 12 parents to the Academic Review Evening yesterday, and this evening we will be welcoming Year 11 parents to the IGCSE drama showcase, where students will be filming their exam pieces in front of a small audience of family and friends. On Friday morning, we welcome Year 12 and 13 parents to a meeting about the IB 5 year review.  Students, meanwhile, are busy preparing for their upcoming cycle 2 assessments which begin next Wednesday.

In addition to the assessments for Years 7 to 10 next week, we also have a Tanzania information evening on Thursday for the parents of those Year 12 students involved in this exciting opportunity, and on Saturday 27 February we have a group of senior students attending the ‘We Stand We Lead’ China Summit in Suzhou – one of many opportunities for our students to develop their leadership skills and get involved with activities with a global perspective.

The following week, week beginning 29 February, the assessment cycle continues, and parents of students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are invited to come in to Academic Review Evenings (AREs). After positive feedback regarding the alphabetical splitting of these AREs last term, we are doing the same again this term but, in the interests of fairness, the second half of the alphabet (N-Z) goes first this time, on Monday 29 February, with those with A-M surnames following on Thursday 3 March.

The week of 7 March is dominated by our fantastic production of Beauty and the Beast, and tickets are selling out for this very quickly. Having been fortunate to see a short excerpt performed this morning, I can tell you that this is a show not to be missed!  Also during this week, on Thursday 10 March, we have our annual Careers and University Fair, when we invite universities and professionals to come and inspire our students to consider the myriad of opportunities that are open to them when they graduate from an international school such as NAIS Pudong. More information regarding this exciting event, to which parents are also invited, will follow shortly.

In the last two weeks of the term, we have our science fiction-themed book week, featuring a sci-fi character dress-up day, a film night (look out for more information soon!) and a visit from the UK National Space Academy which will give masterclasses to our students and staff, and even a lecture for parents. The term then culminates in the final week with the much anticipated International Week, with a whole array of associated activities to ensure we continue to develop ourselves and our students as global citizens.

What an exciting term!  I look forward to seeing you at many of these events.

Kind regards

Dinah Hawtree

Head of Secondary
