NAIS Tigers Football Match Reports

D1 7-a-side Boys

The D1 Boys 7-a-side team played their second game of the season on Friday 19th February against YCIS Pudong. It was a new and fresh looking team for this game in comparison to the team which won at SAS Pudong on Wednesday.

The team had two Year 9 students and one Year 10 student with the rest of the squad made up of a mix of Year 11 and 12 students. The team started strongly and created a couple of great opportunities to score. One of those opportunities smashed off the bar and bounced off the line, unfortunately it did not go in according to the referee.  Within five minutes of having this chance our team conceded a goal against the run of play. The team continued to play some nice attractive passing football. The midfield was dominated by Joaquin Rios, Naser Dajani-Keenan and Gauthier Jacqmin with Thomas Wallace and Jack Bailey also looking very strong in defence. Thomas Wallace’s excellent throw-ins from the sideline caused YCIS to panic each time he launched the ball towards their goal.

The equalising goal came midway through the first half and it was a great finish from our striker, Oleg Grunda. In the second half, NAIS Pudong continued to apply pressure on YCIS’s defense and a few good saves from their keeper prevented NAIS Pudong from adding a second goal. Mr Dawson and Mr Keenan shuffled a few players into different positions but to no avail, the game finished 1-1. Mr Dawson and Mr Keenan were happy with the result and the attitude and commitment from the NAIS players.

D1 11-a-side Boys

The D1 Boys 11-a-side team played a strong Dulwich team. We opened the scoring early on with a great cross shot from Aleks Niggli. From then on in Dulwich began to dominate the game but our defence was strong, holding off the Dulwich attacks and, a minute before half time, they scored a goal due to a mix up in defence. In the second half, the Dulwich team took control of the game and was attacking at will. Our work rate and defence were outstanding. Just before the end of the game, we broke out and should have scored a goal but sadly we did not take our clear-cut chance. The game ended at 1 – 1 and the boys should be proud of their work rate, positive support for each other and the captain Emiliano D’Angio was outstanding with his tackling and leadership throughout the game.

D1 7-a-side Girls

On Friday 19th February, our girls 7-a-side team totally outplayed the YCIS Pudong girls’ team and ran out easy winners by 10 goals to nil. The goals were spread between the team and it was a very good performance.

D1 11-a-side Girls

On Tuesday 23rd February our girls 11-a-side team played Dulwich College. It was a very close game with few chances from both teams due to both teams’ defence dominating the game. During the second half as the game progressed, both teams began to make some clear-cut chances. Five minutes from the end, Dulwich scored and they ran out winners by 1 – 0. This is the first defeat the girls have encountered this season. Tomorrow they will be playing a very strong Concordia International School girls team and the girls need to pick themselves up and be ready for the next tough game.

U13 FOBISIA Basketball Tournament Report

The U13 boys and girls FOBISIA teams played in an invitational basketball tournament at NAIS Pudong last Saturday. Both teams played against Dulwich College Shanghai, Dulwich College Suzhou and BISS Puxi.

The girls team played Dulwich College Suzhou in their first game, playing well throughout, and lost by only 1 point. The girls went into their second game against Dulwich Shanghai knowing they needed to continue to develop their passing and shooting. The defensive work was good and they did keep a strong Dulwich team away from their basket. The game ended with our girls losing by 10 points to 4. In their last game against BISS Puxi, the team kept working hard and again their defence was good, but we missed lots of shots under the basket. The game finished with BISS Puxi winning by 17 – 6. The team played well together and should be pleased with their first basketball games even though the results did not go their way. This allowed the coach, Mrs. Parrish, to focus on our girls’ shooting as their approach work and their defensive work was good.

The boys team started the tournament well by beating Dulwich College Suzhou by 18 – 11. The second game saw two very good teams as our boys played Dulwich College Shanghai. It was a very close game with both teams working tirelessly throughout on defensive as well as offensive play. The game came down to the last minute and Dulwich won by 9 – 7. In the last game against BISS Puxi the boys started well, but in the second half their defence was broached many times by the BISS Puxi attack. The result was 16 – 10 to BISS Puxi. The team played really well together and there were some outstanding individual performances from Jason Drewes, Jake Lonsdale and Matthew Ward.

The day was a great opportunity for our teams to play together and allows the coaches to focus on the areas the teams need to improve upon prior to attending the games in Hong Kong in March.

The British Schools U14 Volleyball Cup

The NAIS Tigers U14 Boys Volleyball team performed exceptionally well throughout the group games. In the first game against BISS Puxi, our boys won by two sets to zero (25-20 and 25-18). In the second group game the team narrowly lost by two sets to one, with the score in the final set 18-16 in favour of Dulwich College. In the final group game against Wellington College, the score was two sets to zero and we dominated the match from beginning to end. The final score was 25-16 in the first set and 25-18 in the second set. The team qualified for the final following their two wins.

In the final we narrowly lost to Dulwich College in three sets again. The score in the third set was 15-13, so a very close game. The team’s attitude and enthusiasm throughout the competition was excellent. I am certain that these boys can only improve and will achieve better results in the future.

The team played Dulwich College on Tuesday in their C1 CISSA league game and our boys team won the game by two sets to one. The team can build on the result leading into their cross-river CISSA tournament on Saturday 19th March. The team is as follows:

Tomasso Carnelli, 9A; Thomas Wallace, 9A; Till Scholten, 9B; Laurenz Wiener, 9A; Rahul Suresh, 9B; Riccardo Perone, 9C; Nathaniel Joshi, 9B; Alex Khalife, 9B and Mario Kim, 9B.

U11 Netball Match Report

On Saturday 20th February, the U11 netball squad travelled to Dulwich Suzhou. The girls have been working extremely hard on improving their core skills such as footwork, man-on-man marking, moving forward into space and accurate passing; it was pleasing to see great improvement since the previous fixture over two weeks ago.

The girls came away from the fixture feeling happy with two wins and a draw against Dulwich Shanghai teams 2 & 3 and Dulwich Suzhou. A combination of a stronger mid-court section with Chiyi Kong (C), Araya Richards (WD), Amelie Zhou (WA) and our shooting team Sophie Hugo (GA), Alexia Brent (GS) and Megan Watson (GS), helped direct the team to victory! Our defending squad members had a tough time against Dulwich Shanghai and BISS Puxi but never faltered in their positive attitude towards their team and the game. Well done to Marlene Weiner (GD), Jisu Kim (GD) and Jada Chen (GK). A great second fixture and we look forward to seeing the squad continue to improve as we rapidly move through the season.
