English

Our English work next week continues to link to our topic work. We will be reading ‘Sunshine Makes the Seasons’ (Franklyn M. Branley) – a non-fiction book explaining why we have night and day and seasons. Using the information in this book, children will create their own text about day and night. They will be asked to categorise information in appropriate paragraphs, write headings and sub-headings and identify and use other conventions of non-fiction texts. Following on from this, the children will investigate poetry in different forms and write seasonal poetry of their own.

Our spelling objective next week is to investigate word families using the prefixes ‘dis’ and ‘mis’. The children will learn how they can use these prefixes to create antonyms (opposites).

In guided reading, the children will be identifying themes and conventions in non-fiction texts.

Maths

Following on from our week of multiplication, next week the children will learn a variety of strategies for division. They will learn that multiplication and division are inverses, and use this knowledge to multiply and divide by 10 and 100. They will also learn how to derive multiplication and division facts from multiplications they already know (2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables). They will progress to using formal written methods for division (the bus stop method).

Topic

In Topic next week we will continue to investigate shadows. The children will devise an investigation into how to create shadows of different length, as well as how to change the direction of a shadow. They will learn about how a shadow is affected by the position of the sun in the sky and they will find out what happens to their own shadows over the course of a day.

In computing, we will begin our next unit; ‘We are Programmers’.  In this unit, the children will be creating an animated cartoon using characters they have designed.
