5C - Ethan for responding to feedback in Guided Reading and English, and for an inquisitive approach to his Maths learning

5D - Louise for showing a resilient attitude during English lessons

English

Next week in English, we will continue basing our lessons on the novel ‘Pig-Heart Boy’ (Malorie Blackman). Firstly, we will be looking at the author’s use of language and structure. The children will be commenting particularly on phrases and the images these create for the reader.

Next we will look at a newspaper article in the book and discuss the features of writing in this style. This will include understanding bias and looking at positive and negative points of view.  At the end of the week, the children will write their own newspaper article in the style of the author. They will need to decide if they are for or against the pig heart transplant and demonstrate this in their writing.

In reading, we will be looking at summarising parts of texts including paragraphs, pages and chapters.

Maths

Next week is the last week of multiplicative reasoning. This week, the children were solving money, length problems and scaling amounts. They reviewed written methods for multiplication and division.

We will be focusing our attention next week on solving problems involving percentages, decimals and fractions. The children will be multiplying and dividing numbers mentally drawing upon known facts. Towards the end of the week, the focus will be on solving problems involving square numbers and cube numbers. We will also review our work on scaling amounts.

Topic

Next week, we will conclude our work as technologists by evaluating our very successful summer rolls. We will then write instructions for them.

As scientists we will be learning about the physical and emotional changes that happen to boys and girls during puberty. As part of this, we will be discussing the importance of hygiene. During these sessions the boys and girls will be taught separately; the boys by male teachers and the girls by female teachers.

At the end of the week, we will be preparing our exit point which will demonstrate our learning on the heart and lungs. The children will make presentations to deliver to a class in the primary school.
