English

Next week we move onto narrative writing within our English work. Children will continue to link their learning to our AD 900 topic. Myths will be the genre and, using this, children will revisit and embed the following objectives:

  • Draft and write; using further organisational and presentation devices to structure text and guide the reader e.g. headings, bullet points, underlining
  • In narrative, describe settings , characters and atmosphere and integrating dialogue to convey character and advance action
  • Evaluate and edit by ensuring the consistent and correct use of tense throughout a piece of writing

Children will learn to create atmosphere by describing characters and setting in detail and focusing on how this can not only create or change feelings of the reader, but also move the action of their story forward.

Maths

This week, children have consolidated learning on algebra and finding the 'nth' term. Next week we will move onto learning about Shape. Children will compare and classify geometric shapes based on increasingly complex geometric properties and sizes. Children will also revise the properties of 3D shapes and learn to recognise these shapes from their nets. We will also draw and translate shapes onto a coordinates plane and use rotation and reflection to change the image. More confident children will apply these skills to a wider context and embed their knowledge in different contexts.

Topic

The children have had a fantastic week learning all about ancient civilisations and the impact of their history on our world today. Children had a wonderful opportunity to create their own Mayan codices books using ancient hieroglyphics and Mayan coding.

Next week children will be making comparisons between the ancient civilisations and beginning to distinguish between right and wrong. We will also learn about different religions of the day and understanding these beliefs along with their impact on communities at the time.
