English

In Year 3, our International Week studies focus around the continent Oceania, so our English work next week is based around Australia. The children will use their retrieval skills to read and make notes from non-fiction texts about the late, famous Australian wildlife expert, Steve Irwin. They will be asked to show their understanding of the text by writing a brief summary of what they find out. They will also use secondary sources to find more information about him, and using this to write a biography. In doing this, the children will learn how to organise and write paragraphs correctly.

In spelling, the children will continue to explore spelling patterns for suffixes.

In guided reading, the focus will be using known information in a story to make predictions.

Maths

In Maths next week, we will continue to focus on shape. To follow our international theme, the children will explore symmetry and shapes in the flags of some different countries. They will learn about horizontal, vertical, parallel and perpendicular lines and use this knowledge to sort flags. From here, the children will revise angles, identifying right angles, as well as acute and obtuse angles. The children will apply all of this knowledge to giving more detailed descriptions of 2D shapes, using accurate language. To end the week, the children will apply their understanding of turns and degrees to programming ‘Bee Bots’ around an obstacle course.

Topic

In Topic next week, we will focus on International Week. In Year 3, we will focus on Australasia/ Oceania. We will learn about some of the different countries, find their location on a map, take part in art and drama activities and explore the different cultures of the region.
