English

To continue with our learning last week on writing fables and legends, we will be looking at these types of stories that originate from Ancient Egypt. Students will have a chance to read and listen to several different fables, legends and creation stories from around the world in order to get a better understanding of what they entail.  They will be then looking at the use of speech and how they can add this to their writing to add more description and life to their stories. We will also recap on creating a vivid setting, interesting characters and a plot that will grab the reader. Given the type of writing that we are looking at, students should be able to come up with a lesson or an explanation of how something happens through their writing.

Maths

In Maths we will be revisiting fractions this week. We will be looking at fractions, in particular equivalent fractions.  Students will be learning to recognise and find families of equivalent fractions.  After this we will be working on finding fractions of amounts.  We will also be reviewing writing the decimal equivalents of numbers as hundredths and thousandths.  All this will then be used to solve word problems in an investigation setting.

Topic

The focus this week in topic will be basing our learning around International Week.  The Year 4 classes will be learning about countries within North and South America which include the United States, Mexico and Belize.  This ties in with our topic of Ancient Egypt, as in some of our learning we will be looking at the history of these countries.   Each class will have the opportunity to learn about each of these countries and do some activities based on each of them.  We will also have the opportunity to share our learning with classes that we are partnered with in other year groups.  This along with the International Day Parade and the Food Fair will make for a week full of fun and learning about the diverse countries that make up the world today.
